Finding gratitude in difficult times — gentle practices for harder days
Gratitude feels easy when life is gentle. When the days are soft and the light is warm, thankfulness flows without effort. But in the harder seasons, gratitude can feel out of reach — like a language we once spoke fluently, now sitting heavy and unfamiliar on the tongue.
Why gratitude still matters in hard times
In moments of loss, stress, or uncertainty, our nervous system moves into protection mode. We scan for danger, focus on what’s missing, and forget to see what’s still here. Gratitude, even in its smallest form, helps shift that focus — not to deny the pain, but to make space for what is still good, still holding us.
Small ways to begin again
When gratitude feels too far away, start small:
name one thing you can sense right now — a color, a scent, a sound.
keep a single object nearby that reminds you of something or someone you love.
create without pressure — use a mindful art prompt to help you notice details you might otherwise miss.
write one word of thanks on a slip of paper each day — even if it’s the same word, over and over.
Using art as a gentle anchor
In my own life, art has been both a mirror and a shelter. It reflects where I am — sometimes messy, sometimes layered, sometimes tender. And it gives me a place to rest that’s outside the storm, even if only for a few minutes. This is why I created the Between the Seconds prompts — to help you anchor into small, present moments that make gratitude possible, even on the harder days.
Little daily reminders
Sometimes we just need a soft nudge to look up and remember. That’s why I love surrounding myself with small, visual reminders — a painting, a handwritten phrase, even a wallpaper on my phone that makes me pause and breathe.
I’ve gathered some of my own affirmation wallpapers on Etsy, designed to hold that same quiet encouragement. They’re like a small window back into gratitude, each time you see your screen.
