Clearing energy creatively: Smoke, color, and the art of letting go
How gentle rituals and creative acts can help release what no longer serves
There are moments when we feel heavy - but not from anything specific. It’s as if a fog has settled inside the body. A quiet tightness in the chest. An emotional echo that doesn’t belong to this moment - but lingers anyway. This is energetic residue. The kind we absorb from rooms, from people, from stories, from seasons. And unless we tend to it gently, it accumulates.
But you don’t need a dramatic ritual to let it go. You don’t need to wait for the full moon or escape to a retreat. Sometimes, all you need is a small act of intention. A color. A scent. A gesture. A piece of art you create - not to display, but to clear.
Why energy needs clearing
Especially for those of us who are sensitive, empathic, or in helping roles, energy builds quietly. You might carry the emotions of your clients. Or the unspoken weight of a tense conversation. Or simply the static of a too-fast world. And when that energetic “dust” collects, it becomes harder to hear yourself. Harder to feel your light. Energetic clearing isn’t about perfection. It’s about returning. Returning to your rhythm. Returning to your body. Returning to your inner stillness.
Creative clearing: Letting ritual meet art
Over time, I’ve built my own quiet rituals. Not from tradition, but from experience. And almost always - they include something tactile. Something that allows the body to be involved in the release.
Here are a few of the practices that hold me:
1. Smoke as a soft reset
I sometimes light incense or herbs - not as a performance, but as a way to mark transition. One breath of intentional smoke can signal to the nervous system:
This moment is different. You can soften now.
It doesn’t need to be elaborate. Even watching the way the smoke curls into the air can help your body exhale something old. You can pair this with a spoken affirmation like:
“What no longer belongs to me may now leave.”
2. Color as emotional alchemy
Colors hold frequencies. They speak without language. And sometimes, when you don’t have the words to express a feeling, color will say it for you. When I feel energetically overwhelmed, I often create quick, no-pressure pieces with just color. No shapes. No rules. Just movement.
Black when I need to draw something out.
Red when I want to reignite vitality.
Soft blue when I want to clear grief or fatigue.
Gold when I want to call my light back.
This isn’t art for display. It’s art for transformation. You can even burn or bury the piece afterward, if it feels right.
3. Tactile release: Let the body join the ritual
One of the most powerful ways to clear energy is to use your hands. Not just to write about your feelings, but to move them. In the Built of Light series, I created textured paintings designed to be touched - especially during moments of emotional intensity. Placing your hand on a surface - pressing into texture - and speaking a release aloud can be a beautiful clearing practice:
“I return what is not mine.”
“I forgive myself for holding too much.”
“I release with love, and I remain whole.”
When the body joins the intention, the shift deepens.
Clearing is not erasing — it’s remembering
You’re not removing something “bad.” You’re making space for what’s real. Clearing energy is not a rejection of the past. It’s a devotion to the present. And whether you use smoke, or color, or a textured canvas - what matters most is that it’s yours. A ritual made by your hands, in your language.
A small practice for this week
Choose one of the following:
burn a small bundle of herbs or incense with intention.
create a 5-minute color ritual: just one color, one movement, one moment.
place your hand on something textured and speak a truth that clears.
Don’t overthink. Just show up. And when you’re done, close with gratitude.
“Thank you, body, for holding so much.
I trust you to let go when it is time.”
